New Haven is a suburb of Fort Wayne located on the east side of the city. With a population of just over 12,000 this city provides a great living environment for those wishing to persue a small town atmisphere.

Schools

New Haven is part of East Allen County Schools (EACS). Public shools that serve the city are New Haven High School, New Haven Middle School, Meadowbrook Elementary School and New Haven Elementary School. For those wishing to persue a private education the city has St. John the Baptist Catholic and Central Luthern School. The city is also the headquarters for EACS.

Economy

New Haven is surrounded by an abundance of fertile soil used for agriculture. The city is also host the headquarters of Do It Best Corporation and Central States Grain.

Demographics

As of the 2000 census, there were 12,406 people, 4,900 households, and 3,415 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,522.0 people per square mile (587.7/km²). There were 5,141 housing units at an average density of 630.7/sq mi (243.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.03% White, 0.67% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.95% of the population.

 

There were 4,900 households out of which 32.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.0% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 25.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $41,802, and the median income for a family was $49,597. Males had a median income of $36,370 versus $25,280 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,960. About 4.9% of families and 6.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.7% of those under age 18 and 7.6% of those age 65 or over.

Housing

New Haven has experienced a boom in new development over that past few years. Builders such as Granite Ridge, Lanica Homes and Westport have broke ground in New Haven.
